Taking Suggestions

Recovery

Taking suggestions is a vital part of recovery. Early on we can be humbled by what has brought us to our knees, usually addiction or alcoholism. Unmanageability has taken us to an unfamiliar place in our lives. Sometimes treatment is an early on resource to gain the tools we’re going to need in recovery, there after outpatient treatment and a sober living atmosphere are often suggested. Suggested but not required, suggestions are rarely taken by those who feel that they are okay. We have to remember that if we have been humbled enough to go to treatment then maybe we are not okay. Maybe we should take the suggestions from here on out.  It is suggested to find a sober living environment just as its suggested that you attend meetings and find a sponsor.

How Long Do We Need To Take Suggestions

It’s easy in early recovery to take a suggestion, you’ve been humbled and have learned that your way was not working. You look to others for answers, people that are “doing the deal” so to speak. People that have accomplished something in their sobriety offer a lot to the newcomer in terms of helping them find their way.

One problem that is common however is that once someone is in recovery and has started to regain confidence and material things, they become complacent and begin to stop thinking that other peoples suggestions will work for them. They take back the reigns if you will.

Taking back the reigns can be a dangerous business for us, we need to stay diligent. Taking suggestions is as important to someone with five years as it is to someone with five days. Alcoholism and addiction are described as a sickness, a malady. We are not miraculously cured from such an affliction but we can recover. Taking suggestions throughout your journey will help you with that recovery, don’t be fooled by time and experience. Stay sturdy and learn that an outsiders perspective is vital, that we don’t always know what’s best for ourselves.
