Throughout life, we all meet people who inspire us. We occasionally stumble upon common saints, who do things for the simple purpose that they want to help people, and expect nothing in return.  Brad Mersereau is one of those people. He strives to keep teenagers and young adults away from that first drink or drug.  If a person does not drink or drug before age 21, future addiction is unlikely.  Mr. Mersereau started “Laura’s Pledge” in memory of his beloved sister who unfortunately lost her battle with addiction.  His goal is to encourage young adults to not drink or drug before 21.

The pledge is as follows…

“I will live my life to the max.  I will honor my mind, body, and spirit by not smoking, not using illegal drugs, or drinking alcohol before my 21st birthday.  I will educate myself about these dangerous substances and live my dream without them.  If tempted, I will speak with my parents, or a trusted friend.  I will communicate my thoughts and feelings and stay strong.”

Brad also celebrates sobriety recovery.  660 sobriety champions celebrate 8600 clean and sober years on his Sobriety Anniversary web page.  His goal is to reach 20,000 collective years of sobriety.  Brad is a huge supporter of people who were about to recognize their challenge, and chose sobriety to have a better life.  He believes his online sober community offers support.   All of his hard work is without profit, and completely in memory of his late sister Laura, who died at the age of 46 from complications sustained battling with alcoholism.

Here at Sober Nation we encourage you to learn more about Laura’s pledge.  Addiction is powerful, it does not discriminate, and it is unpredictable.  It is for these reasons that we encourage you to take Laura’s pledge.  We encourage parents to talk to your children about the dangers of alcohol, and to take the pledge.  You may be saving their lives.
