Faith Based Drug Addiction Treatment Centers

Inpatient Addiction Treatment

Faith Based

Addicts and alcoholics face many struggles in regarding to coping with their addiction. For many people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol, the consequences of addiction severely impact their physical and mental functioning. For those who have strong religious backgrounds, there is the added struggle of questioning the strength of their faith in the face of addiction. Traditional addiction treatment programs may not address the spiritual component of recovery and thus may not be the best option. Faith-based addiction treatment centers are an ideal option for those with deeper senses of spirituality to pursue recovery from substance abuse. Combining traditional drug rehab services with a more spiritual approach, faith-based centers can provide serenity for body, mind and spirit.

Defining Faith Based Treatment Centers

A faith based addiction treatment facility approaches addiction from a spiritual point of view and gears an individual’s plan for recovery towards spiritual completeness and fulfillment. The guiding philosophy of a faith based treatment model is that substances are used in order to fill the void in a person’s soul due to their lack of faith and belief. It is believed that adding God or a “higher power” will help fill that void and thus remove addiction from the individual.

What are the Benefits of a Spiritually Based Treatment Center?

There are a couple of major benefits that spiritually based addiction treatment centers can provide addicts. The first advantage that faith-based rehabilitation centers have over more traditionally-based centers is they operate from the same spiritual values that are important to the addict. This will help the addict feel more supported as they seek help with their addiction. Addicts will be able to talk to staff about their religious or spiritual concerns as well as their psychological and physical needs. This is especially important if the addict is trying to forgive themselves or seek forgiveness from God for the way the acted towards themselves and others while under the influence of drugs.

The second advantage of attending a faith based recovery facility is that everybody in the program holds similar spiritual beliefs. This will give the addict a chance to form friendships and engage in fellowship with other believers who are going through similar experiences. This will help strengthen faith and allow the addict to realize that many people who believe in God struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. Additionally, addicts in the program can support and inspire other people who are going through the program.

Those who complete rehab at a faith-based treatment center may still be able to continue engaging in fellowship with other group members after you they leave drug rehabilitation. The continuing support may help give meaning to their struggles with alcohol and drugs and they may feel like they were chosen by God to help others who are suffering. In fact, after recovering with drug or alcohol addiction many former addicts start believing that their difficulties were part of God’s plan for them.

Do You Need to Have a Particular Spiritual Belief to Enter A Faith Based Program?

For many addicts who are considering treatment at a faith based addiction treatment center, one of the main questions that is asked is if they need to be of a particular faith or belief system to enter treatment. The answer to that question is relatively simple; most spiritually based recovery programs are designed for people with a particular religious belief. For example, Christian rehabilitation centers will approach recovery from a Christian perspective, helping those in recovery to strengthen their relationship with Christ in order to overcome their addiction.  The truth is there are many different faith-based rehabilitation programs in existence so the chances are excellent that an addict will find a faith-based treatment program that is geared to their specific religious background and experiences.

What Types of Programs Are Available at a Faith Based Treatment Center?

Spiritually based addiction treatment programs slightly differ in regards to the mix of traditional rehab services with spiritual philosophies and teachings. Some faith based centers may place less emphasis on the spiritual component than other centers. Despite these slight differences, treatment programs that are faith based may employ the following services for clients:

  • Medical detoxification services
  • Dual diagnosis evaluation and treatment (or may provide referrals for mental health treatment)
  • Intensive inpatient or outpatient services
  • Individual and group counseling sessions
  • Therapy options such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Family therapy and counseling
  • Relapse prevention education and training

In addition to these services, there are also the following programs that are provided at faith based treatment facilities:

  • Education on spiritual principles
  • Religious study, prayer and meditation

The faith based addiction treatment model can also be effective in the treatment of other addictions such as gambling addictions, sex addiction and addictions to food. Because these addictions are also seen as filling spiritual voids, faith based treatment models are an attractive option. As stated earlier in this article, ongoing care and support after formal drug treatment is an added benefit that faith based addiction facilities provide for clients. Due of the spiritual connection made with others in recovery there is a community to support the recovering addict when faced with temptation.
